#1 Thrift finds: Y2K - dead or still thriving?
The looks I created with thrift finds. Also, SELL or KEEP? what do you think?
Besides writing one of my other favorite activities is thrifting. I decided to combine the two and give you a (hopefully weekly) low-key update on my thrift finds.
* Little side note here: I sell most of the clothes I show you here, so this justifies why I shop so much and can do this weekly. Not because I have a severe shopping addiction, ahem.
Lately I notice I am gravitating towards Y2K pieces when I am on the hunt for some cute thrift finds. And yes, I know I am late to the Y2K trend party, but I also notice there are still a lot of people buying items that represent the early 2000’s.
According to Trendalytics the trend started to make a comeback in 2020.
‘‘Search interest began growing in January 2020–directly correlated with the growth of TikTok. In 2020, TikTok increased its US user base by 85% compared to the previous year and the obsession with 2000s fashion began. In 2021, Y2K fashion gained mass popularity after high-profile celebrities started sporting the look’’.
As much as I’d like to think I’m original and not influenced by trends, it’s impossible to attain. Every time I open Pinterest, or I walk in the streets of Amsterdam, my visuals send a signal to my brain to capture the commonalities I see. When I’m in a shop and I grab a ruffled sheer blouse because I think I like it, it probably has something to do with the fact that I’ve seen it everywhere and it’s locked in my subconscious mind.
The Y2K trend is still very prominent where I live. I watch ‘Not So Blonde’ on YouTube and she interviews people on the street, (favorite YouTube account!) and in one episode she asked people about the Y2K trend. Some people said it should be dead by now, some still really enjoy the aesthetics. Hate it or love it, personally I like elements that remind me of a slower time where flip phones were ruling and your best ‘‘selfies’’ were in a dirty mirror with a flash on.
My personal style is probably a mix of everything. I do not solely buy Y2K items, because I am definitely never leaving the house in a full Y2K outfit. However, they seem to sell the best in my Vinted shop.
Alright, let’s get to it!
Look 1.
The baby pink halter top is the item I thrifted. I love how the ruffles give the top a bit more character. I think it’s very cute but I am not sure if this is an outfit I would wear, so I am definitely selling the top.
Look 2.
If this doesn’t scream 2000’s I don’t know what does. My fiance told me it reminded him of the iconic Versace Jennifer Lopez dress, ‘‘the green one’’ he said. I’ve got to give it to him, it does have the low cut cleavage, and it’s also quite sheer. I am pretty sure I want to sell this one!
Look 3.
Keeping the sheer and ruffles going, I really like this top. It gives me summer vibes and I like that it’s asymmetrical. I probably also wear it with a cute skirt. Probably keep!
Look 4.
Ok - so, the corset is the thrifted item I found last week (honestly my whole wardrobe is now only containing second hand clothes - but let’s focus on the most recent ones) and I really love a corset, it’s so easy to style. Wear a blazer or jacket and you can wear it on colder days as well. Probably will keep it <3
Look 5.
The low rise cargo pants, oh my god. I remember this look was very popular in high school. I don’t think this one is quite cargo since it doesn’t have the pockets but it has some fun details like the stitching. Also, it’s almost a bit of a boot-cut (you don’t see it so well on the photos). I combined it with a retro baseball look-alike shirt, I think I nailed the Y2K vibe. It’s a bit too low rise for my personal taste, so I am selling this pants.
Look 6.
I struggle to find the right description for this one, it looks like a cargo pants, but it isn’t because it doesn’t have the pockets. It also looks like a zip off pant but it isn’t one either because it doesn’t have a zipper. However, I find this still very Y2K because of the low rise and the material. I might even wear this one because you can also wear it a little higher in the waist due to the adjustable elastic waist band. So I’ll probably keep!
Look 7.
This blouse is definitely a keeper for me! I love the color, the details of the lace and it works so well with a black dress pants or a beautiful leather maxi skirt. When I saw it I instantly thought of a date night outfit with a nice lace bra under it.
Other things
Not a look, but I found these biker boots and I am obsessed! They are handmade in Mexico and I feel so weirdly powerful in them. I think it’s really nice if clothes can give you a confidence boost, because sometimes I really need it when my social anxiety is playing up and I feel super timid. Definitely a keep <3
I saw this cutie bag, and at first I thought it was Adidas - fooled me! But I don’t really care to be honest, I think it’s still a cute bag. However, I have sooo many bags so I will sell this one.
That was all for this week! I hope you enjoyed this post <3 Let me know in the comments which outfit you liked, which you didn’t like or anything else you want to share.
Much Love,
Jasmine
Fun post. A day out and some nice thrift finds. Your styling is very creative although I don’t think the 2000’s are making a come back for me. 😅
Love look #2!! Obsessed with the very gyaru style halter tunic tops lately <3
